Bill is Emeritus Professor of Econometrics at the University of Melbourne, having retired from his position as Professor of Econometrics in 2018, a position he held from 2001. At the University of Melbourne he also served as Head (2013-2015), and Deputy Head (2002-2007), of the Department of Economics, Director of the Centre for Microeconometrics (2004-2009), and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies (2005-2007). Bill has co-authored several leading econometrics books covering a range that includes a research handbook, a PhD level text, a Masters level text and an undergraduate text. Working within the general area of econometric methodology, he has made research contributions in a number of areas including estimation and hypothesis testing for heteroskedastic error models, specification and estimation of microeconometric production functions, Bayesian inference, demand modelling and estimation, and estimation and analysis of income distributions. Top ranking journals in which his publications have appeared include Journal of Econometrics, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, and American Journal of Agricultural Economics. He is a Fellow of the Journal of Econometrics. His books and journal articles have attracted over 20,000 Google Scholar citations.
