Gordon Boyce Thompson was the only son of Boyce Thompson and Ida McCausland of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He had a sister named Mildred as well as a brother named Allan who died in 1903. Boyce Thompson was a prominent Toronto businessman, and a long time member of the Queen's Own Rifles, a local militia unit. Ida McCausland was the daughter of Joseph McCausland, a native of Armagh Ireland, who had founded a prominent stained glass window company in Toronto. Gordon Boyce Thompson attended the University of Toronto and completed his undergraduate degree by 1907.
