In 1950, John Russo joined the Arizona Game and Fish Department as a wildlife biologist and began a five-year study of wild bighorn sheep. In 1956, he published *The Desert Bighorn Sheep in Arizona*. His published recommendations are still used in bighorn management. His also led to Arizona's first legal bighorn sheep hunt in 1953. In 1956 he transferred to northern Arizona to become the Kaibab North deer biologist. In 1964 he published *The Kaibab North Deer Herd*.
