Laurence Walter Meynell wrote over 150 books. He was born in Wolverhampton, the son of Herbert Meynell and his wife Agnes Mary Sollom; he became a professional writer in the 1920s. A contemporary satire Mockbeggar from 1924 won the Harrap fiction prize. Meynell wrote juvenile literature as Valerie Baxter and A. Stephen Tring.
