In 1990, Robert began researching family genealogy and in the spring of 2001, he published Perry and Jackson Counties: Three Revolutionary War Carter Brothers and their Families in the magazine Mississippi Genealogical Connections. He has since authored 8 books on Perry County genealogy and military history and co-authored a 9th book with his daughter, Allison R. McSwain.
