Jet Berkhout studeerde Nederlands en werkte als tv-presentator bij jongeren-omroep TED (TMF). Toen TED failliet ging, belandde ze als schoonmaakster in de thuiszorg. Over haar ervaringen schreef ze columns in NRC Handelsblad, die ze later uitgewerkte tot haar debuut De thuishulp. Ook sprak ze op zorgcongressen over haar thuiszorgwerk.
