The main focus of this catalog of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum is the extensive collection of works from Stein, which goes back to the princely roots of the collection and covers a wide spectrum of different genres, ranging from sculptures and reliefs to works of applied art. The first part combines essays on overarching issues concerning this collection area with a scientific catalog. The history of the collection and the catalog of the 1888/89 plaster cast collection of the museum form the second focus of the volume. The collection of plaster casts was extended into the 20th century and supplemented by elaborate color versions and reconstructions of antique sculptures. This largely lost collection provides an unusually telling example of the history of gypsum appreciation in the 19th and 20th centuries.
