Joseph Philip Newmark (1827-1895) was born in Loebau, West Prussia. He immigrated to Utica, New York from Sweden in 1848, and sailed from New Orleans to San Francisco in 185l. He married Augusta Leseritz in 1855 and they immigrated to Poland for several years, but they returned to California where most of their descendants remain.
