Paulus Aegineta, the most important physician of his day and a skillful surgeon, gave original descriptions of lithotomy, trephining, tonsillectomy, amputation of the breast, and the first clear description of the effects of lead poisoning. His work first appeared in Greek in Venice, 1528.
