Although the bulk of this volume is made up of biographical sketches and anecdotes from the lives of dozens of Methodist preachers, the author has aspired to more than that. He explores the evolution of Methodist practice through the 19th century, and describes the institutional growth of the church. He also employs extended quotes from letters and journals to portray life on the Indiana frontier.
