G. P. R. James
A historical novel by GPR James, set in the times of the Battle of Evesham. Although James pays due homage to Simon de Montfort, this is a prototype of the sensation novel of the mid-nineteenth century, with a complicated plot, and cardboard cutouts for characters. Since it is by James, the reader is sure of a good story, although his long interjections as the omniscient author detailing the landscape, the action, the persons and their very thoughts can be tedious to a modern reader. Robin Hood plays a minor rôle as the friend and advisor to the hero.
