Fourteen-year-old Cheater lives with her adopted, hard-drinking father, her beloved rooster Flitter Dick, and an odd assortment of animals on an Arkansas farm. When a tornado forces her to take in the farm owner's family, she must struggle to support the enlarged household and cope with the owner's difficult wife.
