Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during the campaigns of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and identified with civilians and soldiers who acted as his hosts. His narrative of Lee's spring and summer campaigns in 1863 is loaded with perceptive biographical detail about Lee and a number of his subordinates as well as his observations of a rebel nation.
