Metals have become some of the most recycled materials in the world. The risk of recycling radioactive contaminated materials has greatly increased. This publication presents an overview of the situation in the scrap metal industry. It provides information on a number of national and international standards, requirements, and procedures that are valuable in determining the degree of problem that has been encountered, and presents recommendations for prevention, detection, and reaction to radioactive material in scrap metal. It also offers introductory information to help the reader understand the various methods and equipment that are available to monitor for and detect radiation in metals.
