Today's library users often make their searches on a variety of commercial databases before coming to the library catalog to search for the titles that interest them. The next generation of library catalog should, ideally, be able to work with a large central index allowing it to bring together bibliographic records from various institutional collections. The essays in this collection address some of the issues that can be anticipated.
