"This exhibition commemorated the 300th anniversary of Palmares, the general headquarters of slave resistance established under the leadership of the legendary hero Zumbi. The goal of the exhibit was not an explanation of black culture, but rather an attempt to provide a frame of reference for appreciating the influence of African culture on Brazilian arts: popular music, painting and sculpture, folk feasts, rituals, and religions.
