This report provides an overview of the key problems and perspectives toward sustainable production and use of biofuels for energy purposes. In particular, it examines options for more efficient and sustainable production and use of biomass. The report mainly covers so-called first generation while considering further lines of development, and focuses on the global situation, recognizing regional differences. Finally, it marks uncertainties and highlights needs for research and development.
