Jörg Extra
"Photographs of everyday events in New York City form the basis of Jörg Extra's work. The city in its many different facets is the ideal point of departure for his works of art, which are authentic records of reality. Camera in hand, Extra meanders through the vibrant city's streets, always in search of a new motif, from one corner to the next, for hours and days. 'The particular of New York is its multiplicity. Harlem, Queens, Central Park, or China Town: the city contains so many specific worlds,' says Extra who creates 300 to 500 photographs per day during his ramblings. A first selection takes place already on the street, in the evening, at the hotel; then a second one: 'I know instantaneously which images I will later turn into a painting.' The everyday triviality takes on the function of a leitmotif. Extra's images project a pristine directness. However, his painting is not a mere copy of the photographs, but the art is rather to inspire the imagination."--Publisher's description.
