K. P. Philipose
It is a novel written by Prof. K. P. Philipose (1929-2011), former Malayalam Professor at Bishop Moore College, Mavelikara, Kerala, India. The story revolves around a youth "Chacko" who had to run away from his native place fearing he would get arrested by Police for assaulting his teacher. He reaches a rubber plantation in a remote corner of Kerala. In the plantation he finds a whole new world. The workers of the plantation who live in two room row houses called 'Layams' were a a terribly oppressed lot. The local official of the estate who known also as ''Writer' is the virtual ruler there. The poor, illiterate workers are live in a perpetual fear of the Writer. Chacko in the end witness the fall of the Writer and the liberation of the workers and leave the Plantation for his good old village & home.
