Holocaust survivor Jakob Beer, a Jewish boy in Poland is saved from death by a Greek scientist who takes him home to his island, where Beer develops an interest in archeology. In the second part of the novel, in Canada, the 60-year-old Jakob meets a empathetic young professor who helps him confront his past.
