Henry Van Dyke
A true Christmas story, a tale of devotion, belief and sacrifice. In order to help an apparently dying man, the Fourth Wise Man, Artaban by name, a Zoroastrian Magus, is too late in joining the three Magi who are following the Star of the East. He does come to Bethlehem at last, only to find the Holy Family have fled to Egypt. He might have caught up with the fugitives on a swift horse, but stops to protect a newborn infant from the Slaughter. He never does catch up, but at the end, he has a glimpse of the Crucifixion in his last act of charity. Perfect for Christmas reading -- and otherwhen.
