Does archaeology prove the Bible? The question itself is wrong because the Bible cannot be "proved" by any science. The Bible is first of all a book of theology, showing God at work in his world and in relation to man. The relation with man has brought it into the sphere of history, and so of archaeology. Discoveries in the lands where the Bible was written can be set beside what is described, sometimes with a direct link, sometimes as background material. The service of archaeology is mainly to provide the scenery and stage properties, so to speak, for the script which is the Bible. - Foreword.
