This book explores the terrain on which literary criticism and writer's biography meet in the second half of the nineteenth century. Several works devoted to the evolution of literary studies suggest that criticism has merged with the biography, and then walked alongside it until Proust pulled it out of its dogmatic falling asleep. Did things happen so simply and linearly? After having identified the epistemological foundation on which the approximation of criticism and biography occurs, this work ends with an emblematic case: Gustave Flaubert. By his strongly antibiographical stances as by his aesthetic program carried by the desire of an objective and impersonal work, Flaubert seems not to lend himself to this encounter of criticism and biography.
