Pierre Pluchon
Describes the social and juridical situation of Jews, Blacks, and Mulattos in France and in its West Indian colonies in the 18th century. The Mendès-France Affair (ca. 1776), in which two slaves of a Jew demanded their liberty, was an occasion for vilification of Jews. The Encyclopedists were ambivalent, at best, about Jews, despite their professions of tolerance and equality.
