Vauban not only knew how to build, besiege, take or defend hundreds of places, but was also a pioneer of economic and social thought. The collective book published in 2007 for the tercentenary of the death of Vauban (1633-1707) endeavored to present the work of the engineer-architect of the strongholds but also his writings, hence the subtitle 'the stone and the feather '. The following year, twelve sites fortified by Vauban were inscribed on the World Heritage List for their exceptional universal value. Each of the sites represents an emblematic example of fortification (mountain, estuary, sea towers and citadel) and belongs to a network, that of the Major Sites of Vauban. This edition takes into account this recognition by UNESCO by including a new chapter written by Michèle Virol, presenting the classified sites. The historiography of fortification, siege warfare, engineers and Vauban has been enriched over the past ten years and all authors have taken this into account Vauban non seulement sut construire, assiéger, prendre ou défendre des centaines de places, mais fut aussi un pionnier de la pensée économique et sociale. Le livre collectif publié en 2007 pour le tricentenaire de la mort de Vauban (1633-1707) s'est attaché à présenter l'œuvre de l'ingénieur-architecte des places fortes mais aussi ses écrits d'où le sous-titre 'la pierre et la plume'. L'année suivante, douze sites fortifiés par Vauban ont été inscrits au Patrimoine Mondial de l'Humanité pour leur exceptionnelle valeur universelle. Chacun des sites représente un exemple emblématique de fortification (de montagne, d'estuaire, de tours à la mer et de citadelle) et appartient à un réseau, celui des Sites Majeurs de Vauban. La présente édition prend en compte cette reconnaissance par l'UNESCO en incluant un nouveau chapitre écrit par Michèle Virol, présentant les sites classés. L'historiographie de la fortification, de la guerre de siège, des ingénieurs et de Vauban s'est enrichie ces dix dernières années et tous les auteurs en ont tenu compte
