No earlier indictment of a suspected literary forgery based on "textual impropriety" (by virtue, here, of its presence within a demonstrably earlier surround) is known. And despite Origen’s lengthy defence of the integrity of the (Septuagint) Book of Daniel, Julius Africanus’s scholarly point has been accepted by nearly every modern Biblical scholar: although there may have been a Hebrew/Aramaic original of the story of c. 100 BC [cf. W. R. Browning, A Dictionary of the Bible, Oxford], the surviving ‘Susanna’ (and several other bits of Daniel) are relatively late foistings-in. See also D.
