Contains the first printing of the third-century epistolary exchange between Julius Africanus and Origen, on the question of the Susanna story in the Book of Daniel being a relatively modern interpolation – Julius Africanus having ingeniously observed that part of that text depends on wordplay which has to be Greek, not Hebrew or Aramaic. No earlier indictment of a suspected literary forgery based on "textual impropriety" (by virtue, here, of its presence within a demonstrably earlier surround) is known. And despite Origen’s lengthy defence of the integrity of the (Septuagint) Book of Daniel, Julius Africanus’s scholarly point has been accepted by nearly every modern Biblical scholar: although there may have been a Hebrew/Aramaic original of the story of c. 100 BC [cf. W. R. Browning, A Dictionary of the Bible, Oxford], the surviving ‘Susanna’ (and several other bits of Daniel) are relatively late foistings-in. See also D.
