This guide is intended for those who want to try and understand more about water problems and to do something to improve the situation by using appropriate technologies and social mechanisms for sustainable development. Of course, there are many other books on the topic and buckets of information in the information superhighway. This flood of information is, in fact, a problem as most people have limited time and resources to grasp the essentials and move quickly. Much of the existing water literature is bogged down in detail and misses the forest for the trees. This guide attempts to be a template into which the mass of water knowledge is fitted and to provide the basic environmental literacy skills in the topic, especially those most useful in future planning. The guide is a first step which can lead onto the informa- tion superhighway proper, and practical tips are included on where to go for more knowledge, be it in the library or on the Internet.
