A novel that portrays the life of Gomes Freire de Andrade, a Portuguese general and Grand Master of Freemasonry, who participated on the French side during the Napoleonic wars, but was rehabilitated. However, in1817 general Gomes Freire was accused of leading a conspiracy against the monarchy of King John VI. He was arrested and hanged for the crime of treason, together with eleven other Army officers.
