Henry Francis du Pont: " The history of the Winterhur gardens as written by Gordon Tyrell is very complete. His account of their development and Harold Bruce's description of the plantings throughout the garden make me feel that my planting of thirty years ago has been successful. I like to see the shape and size of big shrubs; even though they are always part of a group, one has to know when planting just how big and tall the shrubs are going to be. I would mention the Chaenomeles Walk and the Sundial Garden as examples of this sort of planting. In his study of the garden Mr. Bruce very kindly illustrates what I have tried to accomplish through the years. My work is in the gardens; the story he has written leaves little for me to say except that I hope everyone will enjoy the books as much as I have." Winterthur, July 1967.
