The plot, set in Poland, starts in 1955, and goes up to the present day. It involves the lives of a group of characters from that generation, beginning with their births, childhood, school, adulthood, careers, loves, and (for some) deaths. The main character, the narrator, is also a writer, and simultaneously produces this story featuring her childhood friends, while playing a complex game with her lover.
