Believing that Native Americans descended from the Lamanites, an ancient civilization in the Book of Mormon, LDS church leaders dispatched missionaries to Indian Territory in the mid-1800s. With painstaking dedication and perserverance, the missionaries plowed the rocky ground of Indian Territory and eventually nurtured a vibrant Mormon community in present-day Oklahoma.
