Hacienda Tokens of Puerto Rico
Work detail
From the late 19th to the early 20th century Puerto Rico’s hacienda owners struggled with the lack of circulating currency in the island. The response of many was to create their own currency to pay the workers. This monetary system worsened the workers’ precarious conditions because the tokens or riles could only be used at the hacienda’s general store. This catalog provides information and pictures of the hacienda tokens of Puerto Rico to numismatists as well as readers interested in this aspect of Puerto Rican history. This book includes: •Coin description including accurate measurements •Rarity index •Historical information about the haciendas, their location and their owners •Pictures of tokens in color •Information and pictures of medals awarded to hacienda owners in public fairs and expositions •Comprehensive index
