In 51 photographs Kuba Rose depicts his American cousin J's childhood from when he was born until his high school graduation. I's also a story about how J and his father carry on through a difficult divorce. How can a childhood be summarized in a series of images? How can memories even be depicted through photographs? And how do we know that memories are really memories and not memories of a photograph? These are questions that photographer Kuba Rose has been dwelling when photographing his only cousin and uncle. 'I know it's impossible to give a full picture of another person, especially only through photographs. But I've been fascinated by how my cousin and my uncle have carried on together all these years. After spending so much time together, they have grown very close to each other. My uncle even quit working to take care of his son. And after long periods of not feeling well, my cousin is now a young man who is doing well in life.' Included in the book is also an essay by literature scholar and editor Daniel Pedersen - To Develop a Childhood. He uses the works of Marcel Proust to try to understand how our memory works: 'So what can you do if you want to try and remember your childhood and how it was without the use of a memory medium: without photographs, films or conversations? Perhaps that is an almost impossible feat. What Proust reminds us of is the way in which chance opens up the path to remembrance'
