Veronica and Charles Hallard are an ideally happy young married couple living in Lagos where Charles has his job. When the gathering war-clouds in 1939 force Charles to sent Veronica to England ahead of him. But six months later he doesn't arrive as expected - his boat is torpedoed and he has been drowned on his way home. With the news she is almost broken hearted. At first Veronica refuses to believe he is dead. Her cadier grief is intensified almost to insanity. Her broken heart causes her to suffer a complete nervous collapse. Her only consolation is the friendship of Boyd Mansell, who she met on the voyage home. Is is only Boyd's devoted care for her, who has fallen in love with her, that restores her so health. With the time, she had recovered enough to face normal life again, and in Boyd, she finds new happiness and a new love, and the memory of Charles begins to fade. After two years, she and Hoyd are married and have a son. But one day, fate delivers another cruel blow - Charles returns from the dead! Then Charles turns up again, re-awakening in Veronica the desperate passion she had always felt for him. How Veronica finds her happiness, in spite of inescapable cinscunstance, is told with great seill and sincerity in this poisating story of a devotedly passionate love.
