Amy Bloom's "Hold Tight" is a poignant tale of a teenager whose mother is dying of cancer. Lee Smith describes the mother of a murderer in "Fried Chicken." Reynolds Price depicts his first Christmas away from home during "A Christmas in Rome." And Molly Giles describes the experience of a young couple visiting Mexico in "Beginning Lessons."
