This volume is a collection of papers adapted from presentations given at an international symposium in Toronto in June 2002. The conference looked at ways of using new knowledge about genes and genomes to prevent or avoid genetic disease in individuals, families, and communities. Chapters are organized by theme and include: setting the policy context; genetic medicine and privacy; intellectual property; implications for the developing world; and informing government.
