Ragnar Johansson was born in year zero--that is to say, 1932, the year the Social Democrats came to power in Sweden. Ragnar identifies completely with the modern new utopian vision for Swedish society, and sees his mother as a leftover from another era, a peasant society of grinding work and poverty. But Ragnar will come in turn to outlive the world he knows.
