Rock art in Sápmi
Work detail
This book presents a number of sites with prehistoric rock art in Sápmi, the cultural region traditionally inhabited by the Sami people, specifically Västerbotten and Jämtland in Sweden, and two of the largest sites in the Norwegian and Finnish parts of Sápmi - Alta and Värikallio. Nature and the landscape play important roles n the Sami storytelling tradition. The stories may explain why a lake, a rock, or a mountain have the names they do. The stories also bear witness to the way of life, attitudes to nature and the landscape and how these have changed over time.
