Expository Notes on the Epistles of James and Peter
Work detail
Dr. Ironside's heartwarming studies of these three Epistles are separate and distinct, although combined into one volume for ready reference. The study of each book is preceded by an introduction to the author and the people addressed, the reasons for writing the letter, and a complete study outline. The theme of the Epistle of James is "A Living Faith." Dr. Ironside answers those who infer that James contradicts Paul by emphasizing works rather than faith. Paul deals with justification before God, whereas James deals with justification before men, maintaining that righteous living and godly behavior accompany real faith. The Epistles of Peter are "Wilderness Epistles," in that they contemplate the children of God as strangers and pilgrims journeying through the unfriendly wilderness of this world to the Land of Promise. 1 Peter is to testify of "the true grace of God wherein ye stand" -- the grace ministered to us day by day to meet the wiles of the enemy and the trials of the way. The theme of 2 Peter is "Faithfulness in a Day of Apostasy." Peter wrote in view of his forthcoming martyrdom, warning believers of the oncoming flood of error and apostasy which would sweep over Christendom. He stressed the necessity of real confidence in God and His Word for victory in the face of such disturbing conditions. Christians who desire to grow in grace and live triumphantly will find vital help and encouragement in Dr. Ironside's expositions of these significant Epistles. -- Jacket flap.
