El almuerzo
Work detail
Ricardo Amigo's analysis of Antonio Berni's (Rosario, 1905-Buenos Aires, 1981) painting entitled "El almuerzo" (or "Domingo en la chacra") reveals a surprising story. Painted in 1945 and exhibited in 1947, the original image was transformed when it was repainted in 1952 and again in 1971 transforming it from a family scene to a painting of a social message. Berni portrays the boy Juanito in a scene that reflects a clear reference to "The Last Supper" by Leonardo Da Vinci and other Venetian artists who worked on the same religious topic, such as Giovanni Battista Tiepolo or Tinttoreto.
