Born in 1918 in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, Estes was a member of the Chickasaw Indian Nation. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1940 with a degree in civil engineering, and served as an Air Force captain during World War II. </span><br /> <span style="font-family:georgia, 'times new roman', serif;font-size:large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family:georgia, 'times new roman', serif;font-size:large;">Like so many other GIs, Estes moved to Southern California and got married.
