Fay Prescott travels to Old Drove House to take up a position as duenna to Rachel Proudfoot. She is welcomed warmly but discovers her new role involves deception. Despite this she settles in happily and arouses the romantic interest of the local vicar. But Fay has a past from which she cannot escape.
