Uses a case study methodology and draws on the field of dispute resolution in order to assess the Ngai Tahu - Crown negotiations and the settlement. Examines how the negotiations were affected by the MMP electoral system in the 1996 election. Studies the relationship of the Ngai Tahu negotiations to other tribal treaty claim negotiations and settlements, especially those of the Waikato-Taunui tribe.
