The dramatic increase in the issuance of multiple editions by many of the most important professional artists in the United States during the past decade has been paralleled by the growth of interest in printmaking, and its teaching, at universities. This exhibition was conceived by a group of students at the State University College, New Paltz, New York, specifically to fulfill their desire to become aware of the range and quality of work being done in a cross section of university workshops. The enterprising catalog was developed in response to a general need in the literature of contemporary art for a permanent, detailed record of the philosophies, histories, technical resources, and community relationships of many of these ateliers. - Introduction.
