Work detail
**Winner - Dove Foundation** - Seal of Approval for Families of All Ages, **Winner - Creative Child Magazine** - 2010 Preferred Choice Award for Books with Audio CDs - Adapted from a Brazilian folktale - Little Crab played a special game every day. He popped out his eyes and sent them flying through the air and into the sea where he saw animals and beauty under the water. But what happened when Jaguar made Little Crab teach him the game? Magic Eyes is a bilingual book. It is an easy-to read picture book for young readers. The book is written in English and Chinese. It is in full color with beautiful illustrations by Taiwanese artist Ming-Jen Hsu. The author, international storyteller, Dr. Mike Lockett, has included an audio CD in every book with him telling the tale in English. The CD is also in Mandarin. Dr. Margaret Read MacDonald offers the following notes: This tale is Folktale Motif J2423 “The eye-juggler”, which appears in many Native American tales. The crab version was found in British Guyana by German folklorist, Theodor Koch-Grünberg. A Brazilian version is found in Livia de Almeida’s Brazilian Folktales. The retelling in this book was inspired by Margaret Read MacDonald’s Twenty Tellable Tales.
