Scrapbook of letters, newspaper clippings, manuscript notes outlining the debate over whether to admit women to membership in the Massachusetts Medical Society. Also includes a circular distributed to members in 1883 asking if they favored or opposed admission of women to the Society on the same terms as men. Two pamphlets written by James R. Chadwick are also included: The study and practice of medicine by women (New York : A.S. Barnes, c1879), and: Admission of women to the Massachusetts Medical Society (Boston : s.n., 1882). Among other topics covered are the work of women physicians in Asia, the possibility of admitting women to Harvard Medical School, and coeducation in American colleges.
