Over the years, a broad array of mainly financial variables has been proposed for use in formulating and implementing monetary policy. This collection of papers examines the potential value of these various measures as intermediate targets and/or indicators of monetary policy. It includes a review of the Federal Reserve's evolving approach to the use of policy targets and operating guides in the postwar period.
