Russkiĭ ornament X-XVI vekov po drevnim rukopisi︠a︡m
Work detail
This edition reprints a work published in 1870, A History of Russian Ornaments from the Tenth to the Sixteenth Centuries Based on Ancient Manuscripts (Istoriia russkogo ornamenta s X po XVI stoletie po drevnim rukopisiam) edited by V. I. Butovskii. Reproducing in color twenty-nine plates of Byzantine initials and marginal decorations and seventy-one plates of Russian miniatures from illuminated manuscripts of the tenth to the sixteenth centuries, the book offers a treasure of forms useful both for the study of medieval art and the history of design. An appendix of line drawings shows the forms current in Eastern Orthodox manuscripts during six centuries of manuscript ornamentation. -- Summary written by John W. Emerich, Bronze Horseman Literary Agency.
