"The documents here published appeared originally in the [New England Historic and Genealogical] Register. They relate to the Indian war in Maine, which is often called 'Dummer's War' from the fact that Lieutenant - Governor William Dummer was commander-in-chief during the struggle. From Dummer, Captain Westbrook received his commission as Colonel. It is chiefly the orders and letters of the Lieutenant - Governor, and reports from the Colonel, that fill this volume. To these are added the muster-rolls of thirty six companies and eight armed vessels. "Mr. Trask's notes possess the great value to be expected from one of his ability and experience as a genealogist and historian. The portrait is that of William Dummer. Typography and binding are fine, and there are indexes of persons and places." (Book Notices, In: New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. LVI, 1902, January [Heritage Books Reprint 1998] p.104.)
