Richard III
Work detail
Belasco Theatre, Washington, D.C., David Belasco and Sam S. and Lee Shubert, proprietors and managers, direction of Sam S. and Lee Shubert (Inc.), L. Stoddard Taylor, resident manager. William A. Brady announces Mr. Mantell and his distinguished company in the following repertoire: "King Lear," "Hamlet," "As You Like It," "Richelieu," "Othello," "Macbeth," "Merchant of Venice," "Richard III." "Richard III," Mr. Colley Cibber's free but practicable perversion of the tragedy is used. It involves the use of matter from the final scene of the previous chronicle, Part III of King Henry VI, the omission of numerous characters of Shakespeare's, the transposition of some scenes and the elision of others, while a considerable portion of the text, notably the soliloquy on Conscience, in Act II, is Cibber's own.
